Blogmas, 2025 – Weeding My TBR Pile

Good morning, Cyberspace! As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, I have over 120 books in my virtual TBR shelf. As I was looking through them all this week, I realized that some of them are a little bit outdated. Naturally, I want to read all of the books ever to exist, but as someone with limited time here on this earth, I have to eventually come to grips with the fact that that’s not going to happen any time soon. (or, at the very least, not today.)

So today, we are going to knock some books off my TBR by weeding! Weeding–the process of taking books off the shelf that are no longer relevant–was something we did at the library I used to work at. It seems only natural that I should narrow down my own shelves in the same way!

Of course, any books that I take off my virtual TBR are in no way lesser than the books that I’m keeping on it. And it might just so happen that I return to these books in the future! I also have the world’s worst memory and can’t remember all of the books that were recommended to me by friends, so if you happen to see a book on this list that you recommended, I apologize in advance. I swear I did not remember where that book came from.

All right! With all those caveats out of the way, let’s get into it!

BLOGMAS, 2025 – WEEDING MY TBR PILE

THIS IS NOT A GAME by KELLY MULLEN

This was a book I picked up at the local library and then…never….read? TO BE FAIR, I was in the throes of schoolwork when I decided to try and read this. (I don’t know what I was thinking.)

Anyway this book is getting knocked off my TBR and also returned to the library, and I have 0 shame about it. (Although the premise DOES look interesting… Oh well.)

WHEN CALLS THE HEART by JANETTE OKE

I cannot for the life of me remember why I put this on my TBR. I am not usually the Historical Fiction girly, but for some reason or other this ended up on my TBR and I genuinely remember wanting to read it? Alas. Times a change and I no longer need this particular book staring holes at me through my TBR page.

I feel like this is one of those books that will return to my TBR eventually, but for today… *kicks*

THE WORLD SHE EDITED by AMY READING

I found this book in a little bookshop in Ann Arbor. At the time, I was obsessed with editors and–full disclosure–was well on my way to becoming one. (Or, at the very least, wanting to become one.)

There is still a part of me that very much desires becoming an editor (#college), but I’m not as interested in a biography as I was a few months ago.

Will this book return to the TBR the deeper into the publishing industry I get? Possibly! Is it getting the boot today? Yep!

THE SERPENT & THE WINGS OF NIGHT by CARISSA BROADBENT

I believe this was a book that I got for free for my Kindle… I don’t really have any desire to read it at this point, and after reviewing the blurb, I’m a little meh about the plot line. I’m a sucker for a good vampire story, but right now I have my attention diverted elsewhere.

THE STOLEN HEIR & THE PRISONER’S THRONE by HOLLY BLACK

Oh look, a two-for-one sale! I very much enjoyed The Cruel Prince, but I have yet to finish the series. And I can’t very well read the duology that comes after it if I haven’t finished the official series, now can I?

Naturally, the last book in the series is still on my TBR, but these are getting the boot until I can get my act together and finish the OG books.

THE ROAD by CORMAC MCCARTHY

I don’t know where this book came from or why it was on my TBR. But I do know that, judging by the blurb, I’m not really interested in reading it at this moment. (It does appear as though some of my friends have interacted with this book, however, so I’ma hit them up and make sure I’m not making the world’s largest mistake by removing this book from my shelf lol)

THE PILGRIM’S PROGRESS by JOHN BUNYAN

When I look at this book and read the blurb, I get this weird feeling of dread. I just…don’t wanna read it.

That’s it. That’s the reason. Moving on.

HOTEL MAGNIFIQUE by EMILY J TAYLOR

Another book which reminds me of Cotton Eyed Joe (‘where did you come from? where did you go?’ [that’s a joke. I know exactly where you are going. #offtheTBR]).

I really need to start a system where I keep tabs of where these books come from, because I have no clue how it ended up on my TBR. All I know is that the chances of me reading it any time soon are extremely low. So… Bye bye book!

THE NIGHT IN QUESTION by SUSAN FLETCHER

This was actually a book that I was excited about when I first got it! Back when I was a Children’s Librarian, I attended the Public Library Association’s (PLA) Conference in Ohio. It was SO much fun, and a lot of publishers were there handing out free ARC’s of books! One of which that I snagged was The Night In Question.

I technically still have this book as an ARC (…somewhere in the pile of books that I haven’t read…), but it’s not very high on my list of more pressing reads. I do plan on reading it someday in the future, but in the name of clearing out my TBR to something somewhat manageable, we are removing this one for the time being!

It’s very possible it will return someday, though. It’s a fascinating concept.

ANGELWALK by ROGER ELWOOD

Again–where did this book come from? Probably a recommendation from someone or other, but I have NO clue who it was. The premise is…odd. Not bad. Just…odd. It’s about a doubting angel who comes to earth to see what the trash is going on. Apparently he has to choose between good and evil?

Things I like: angels!

Things I don’t like: WHY IS THE ANGEL DOUBTING?

Anyway, we are booting this one for the time being. If I wanna read about angels and demons I’ll read my Bible, thanks.

TALK TO ME, PEASANTS!

All righty. So these were just a few of the books that I’ve kicked off my TBR pile for the time being. There were a few others that weren’t mentioned–mostly nonfiction titles that I’m not interested in anymore–but for the most part, I think we’re making some steady progress on narrowing down my virtual TBR!

What books have been marinating on your TBR lately? Have you read any of the stories on this list? (and should I reconsider giving them the boot?)

Let’s talk about all of the TBR-ish things down below! And until next time…

My big TBR list is on Goodreads, which I set up, ful of enthusiasm, when I was like 15. I have now abandoned Goodreads and did not export my list when I went XD I’m sure I’ll be able to build a new one… (plus my current interests are different, and I’m reading less fiction)

I did enjoy the Cruel Prince trilogy, it felt fae in a way I liked… but! The first sequel felt so generic I couldn’t finish it! So yeet away, I won’t stop you.

This is such a fun book post topic XD

I remember you saying you were reading more nonfiction! (I wish I was this cool. You are my hero.) Yeah, I abandoned Goodreads years ago. I have no intention of going back either, so I suppose you could say it was a clean break. XD

AH! Okay, this makes me feel much better! Sometimes I worry I’m going to miss out on something when deleting books from the TBR, but honestly? I don’t really feel too awful about this particular one. XD

Pilgrim’s Progress is very old fashioned in its style– but I’m into that sort of thing.

I feel like there was a specific reason why I put that one on my TBR…but for the life of me I can’t recall it!
