good morning, cyberspace!
It has officially been one week since Spring FicFrenzy began, and let me tell ya…this week did not go ANYTHING like I had originally planned.
In fact, I wrote on Sunday the 15th, and that was basically it. (HA.) However… I have been having some really good conversations with the Lord lately, and I feel like right now, more than ever, is the time when I need to lock in and just focus–two things I have substantially FAILED AT for a very long time now.
But! Progress was made overall, and I plan on getting some more words in tonight after jotting this recap down, so hopefully my wordcount next week will be a little less disappointing.
As of right now, it is 4:42PM on March 22nd. The weather is cool–very Spring-like, whereas this past week was decidedly NOT–and I have just made it home from a girl’s trip up in Michigan, where I was able to see a very dear friend of mine who I haven’t seen in exactly forever. It’s been a good day–a good weekend, really–and I’m excited and hopeful for the week to come.
Good things are on the horizon! I just gotta keep on believing it.
But alas. You are here for the writing update. (Or perhaps you are here against your will. In which case, welcome! There are cookies at the end. Help yourself.) So let’s talk about Project Goblin, shall we?
SPRING FICFRENZY, 2026 – WEEK ONE RECAP
WORDCOUNTS & STATS
WORDS WRITTEN: 2,160
HIGHEST WORD DAY: Sunday, March 15th
WORDS REMAINING: 27,840
Writing has not been easy for me this past week, I’ll be honest. There were some life-ish things that happened and–while I hate admitting this–I let it get in the way of my storytelling. Thankfully, I serve a very loving God who has helped pick me back up, put me on my feet, and has encouraged me to keep going despite my past failures.
(nothing like a hot cup of the dramatics to start off your Monday right!)
So! This week we are starting fresh. We are moving on. We are going to do the thing and potentially become famous. (Hey, a girl can dream, right?)
THE RECAP
The project I am currently working on is Project Goblin, which you can find some more information on in my stories page here on the blog! In a nutshell, it is a ya paranormal portal fantasy about a guy who’s being hunted by the world of his dreams. I’ll attach my (somewhat sad) blurb below, but please do not judge. I’m not a very blurby person.
Bartholomew Todd had always been a curious child. Now, fully grown, he is an even more curious man. He’s been dreaming of Inkwell for years, and it seems the only way to get it out of his head is to draw that which he sees. As his wall of dark, twisted art grows, so too does Inkwell’s desire to bring Todd back to the place where he lost everything…to bring him back home.
Like I said…kinda a lame blurb. But! The story has been an absolute blast to rewrite, because I feel like this is the version this story was always meant to become. I love that part of the drafting process, where things start coming together so neatly. I guess it makes all of the previous head-bashings pretty worth it.
The project is currently at 18,800 words, which means I have about 55,000 words left until I hit my 60,000 word goal. I know that’s relatively short for a fantasy story, but I tend to lean towards overwriting, so I have a feeling this will probably expand as we go. I also just completed the final chapter in the first act…which means that the next time I sit down to write, I get to start Act II! This is probably the biggest (and most mangliest–yes, that’s a word) act in this book, and quite honestly I’m a little worried about it. Act II is always where the story tends to die for me, so I’m going to do my best to stick to my outline and keep my chin up as I type the next fifteen chapters.
(it always seems to be those blasted cannibalistic faeries that ruin my writing rhythm with this book. gah.)
I would LOVE to finish four chapters this week. If I can do that, I will consider this a very productive week indeed! The plan is to bring my laptop with me to work every day, and work on the project during my lunch breaks. Whether or not that will actually happen remains to be seen, but I have the hope! I have the dream! I can do it if I actually prioritize!
…hopefully.
With it being such a small level of productivity this week, I don’t really have a whole lot on the recap front, but here’s hoping next week brings higher word counts and higher stakes!
